Robux – The Currency of Roblox

Robux (formerly represented as R$) is the official virtual currency of the Roblox platform. Introduced on May 14, 2007, it originally existed alongside Tix (Tickets) until Tix was discontinued on April 14, 2016. The term “Robux” was created by Shedletsky, combining “ROBLOX” and “BUX” (short for “bucks”).

Today, Robux serves as Roblox’s primary and only currency, used to purchase all paid items across the platform — including avatar accessories, game passes, and user-generated content such as microtransactions. The only exception is plugins, which are sold in U.S. Dollars.

Players can buy Robux with real money or earn it by developing games and selling virtual items. Managing Robux wisely allows players to unlock premium content, enhance customization, and improve overall gameplay.

Robux has become a recognizable part of internet and meme culture. It’s often referenced alongside other popular game currencies like Fortnite’s V-Bucks and Minecraft’s Minecoins. One well-known example is the “Bobux” meme that went viral in late 2020, humorously parodying Robux’s value in the gaming community.

On November 21, 2019, Roblox updated the Robux icon, replacing the old R$ symbol with a golden hexagonal design. The change also helped avoid confusion with the Brazilian Real (R$), which shares the same currency abbreviation.
